Matthew is a freelance composer working in film and tv based in North London. He started his career as a sound engineer at Scream studios in Croydon whilst playing in bands and dabbling in electronic music production. After meeting two young film makers whilst living in Brighton he ended up scoring a few short films, enjoyed the experience and decided to pursue it as a career. After graduating from the NFTS with an MA in composing for film and tv he assisted composer Ben Bartlett on the 9th season of Vera before taking on his own projects, courtesy of Clear Story and Double Act, which have featured on Channel 4, the BBC, ITV and Amazon Prime, as well as adverts for Lotus, Depop and Drive Tribe plus numerous short films.
He combines all his influences when writing, blending the aesthetics of a live band with the sophistication of strings and subtle electronics. He’s recorded scores in bathtubs using singing bowls, composed for and conducted chamber ensembles at Angel Studios and spent three weeks in a remote village in the southern Himalayas working on the score for the IDA and Grieson award nominated documentary Chomo.
In his spare time he makes music for the dance floor (link below) and gardens.
